Educational materials abound on the political economy of modernization and development. To meet learning needs from the classics, we take a historical approach that underscores universal concerns. Books 1 and 2 present reviews on “market society” i.e. capitalism. As these point a “development studies” light, to show their perspectives, they let us see and better understand the latter’s paradoxes and contending dilemmas.
Book 3 bears the trilogy’s title. Sui generis, it can be taken as a separate book. Its focus is on one aspect of the political economy of underdevelopment, with Nigeria as its specific case study. Implicit in its point of departure is the thesis that, more than anything else, it is the failure of leadership, that is the root cause of the third world’s stymied development, hence, for any change, to be more fruitful, this failure needs to be cured. This is a major contribution, whose purpose is to inspire all, to get involved in co-working, to lead, in refining, their “third” world.
The goal reflects this author’s consciousness, gained during the 12 years of university level research and teaching, and 18 years of leading, and consulting, in industry. Insights are from the vital sector of Nigeria’s political economy - petroleum. This sector has not accelerated the momentum, created by many decades of abundant natural and human resources in its domain. The insights are intended to point the way; each can contribute to accelerate transformation, in line with typical aspirations of the vast majority in the third world.
The trilogy situates the issues, in a historical and developmental context. Accordingly, Book 3 is preceded by Books 2 and 1, the latter starting with a review of Ashton’s “the industrial revolution” as the catalyst for development of capitalism. This is followed by reviews of Hobbes, on life in the “state of nature”, Adam Smith’s treatises on capitalism as the watershed in man’s rush for the “Wealth of Nations”, and many more philosophical gems of insight.
A must-read for students of political economy, the social sciences, and anyone with a hankering for developmental studies in transformational leadership. Pick up LEADISM today.
